Fake U.S Silver Eagle coins soaring through Hamilton, police say

Hamilton Police say they’ve gathered over 500 fake U.S Silver Eagle coins sold across the city over the past few months.

Hamilton coin collectors and pawn shops are getting duped.

Police are warning that fake U.S silver eagle dollar coins have been circulating in the city and have been sold to various establishments over the past few months.

"You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference (with) the naked eye. The coins are actually very high quality fakes," Const. Mike La Combe said in a Hamilton Police YouTube video. "They are silver and nickel-plated, which gives them the look of an actual silver dollar. However, when you cut them open, you can clearly see on the inside, they are brass filled."

The video shows some of the roughly 500 fakes that have been confiscated so far.

"They are worth practically nothing, just a couple cents each," La Combe explained.

LaCombe is a pawn unit investigator and says the coins are being bought online, then sold at "golden" times for the seller when shops are busy or with little staff. During the rush, employees may not have the time to do all the proper authenticity checks, giving criminals the chance to sell fast without getting caught.

"Only buy them from reputable dealers, a place that is established, an expert who works there who knows the difference between real and fake. Don’t buy them off the internet. and don’t buy them from people from the public who aren’t considered experts because more than likely you’re going to get a fake," added Le Combe.

Hamilton Police: real vs. fake

Real coins should all weigh the same, fake coins have varying weights.
Liberty female’s head is different on a fake coin compared to that of an authentic coin.
Stars on the reverse of the coins above the eagle and shield are further spaced apart on a fake, in contrast to a real coin.
Lettering on the fake coin is thinner and less-defined than the real coin
"Scratch" test-filling a part of the coin away to reveal the interior alloy of the coin will often expose the brass on the inside, confirming it is fake

RENO (MINEWEB) –

U.S. Mint figures show American Eagle gold coin sales hit a three-year high of 209,500 ounces in April, the highest since December 2009 sales of 231,500 coins. These figures include 187,500 one-ounce American Eagle bullion coins.

Year-to-date total gold coin sales now stand at 502,000 ounces as of Tuesday, April 30th. American Eagle one-ounce bullion coins sales now stand at 434,000 ounces as of that date. U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White told Bloomberg that the one-ounce gold bullion coins are the most popular for investors.

Gold prices recorded their biggest one-day loss in dollar terms in 30 years on April 15th.

On April 16th gold prices fell to their lowest level in 16 months, prompting many bargain hunters to invest in gold bullion coins. Sales were so brisk; the U.S. Mint sold out of its smallest gold coin, the one-tenth ounce, forcing the Mint to suspend sales of the coin around April 24th.

By comparison, last April, the Mint reported only 20,000 American Eagle one-ounce gold coins and a total of 26,000 gold coins sold during the month.

Meanwhile American Eagle silver bullion coins sales for the month of April shot up nearly 169% over than last year from 1,520,000 silver ounces in April 2012 to 4,087,00 ounces. “Year-to-date sales of 18,310,000 have never been achieved so soon in a year,” Coin News observed Tuesday. “Last year sales did not top 18.3 million until July 16.”

Gold and Silver • US Mint runs out of 2013 silver coins

US Mint runs out of 2013 silver coins
US Mint
The U.S. Mint has temporarily run out of 2013 American Eagle silver bullion coins.
NEW YORK – The U.S. Mint has suspended sales of its 2013 American Eagle silver bullion coins after running out of stock due to soaring investor demand for the newly minted coins in the first two weeks of the year.

Sales to authorized dealers will resume on or about the week of Jan. 28 after the U.S. Mint has replenished its inventory, it said in an email to authorized dealers on Thursday. The coins are produced at the Mint’s West Point, New York, facility.

While it is typical for collectors to snap up newly stamped coins, interest this year has ballooned due to investors seeking refuge from U.S. economic uncertainty.

Silver Eagle sales to Jan. 15 exceeded 5 million ounces and were on track to surpass the all-time monthly high of 6.1 million ounces, set in January 2012.

Physical coin sales had risen in the final months of 2012 as investors protected their nest eggs from a feared U.S. recession. Many economists predicted a U.S. economic downturn would occur if Congress and the White House did not act to stop pending huge tax hikes and automatic spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff."

It is not the first time the Mint has faced a run on its stock. It started allocating sales to authorized dealers in recent years after its supplies were depleted by unprecedented demand.

The Mint had been due to start taking orders for coins, which fetch just under $63 each, from the general public on Jan. 24.

Gold and Silver • US gold coins set for strongest November sales in 14 years

US gold coins set for strongest November sales in 14 years

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/mar … 433155.cms

NEW YORK: November sales of U.S. American Eaglegold coins are set to be the strongest in 14 years as uncertainty surrounding the U.S. fiscal crisis and the presidential election triggered safe-haven buying, dealers said.

Occasional sharp price swings during early and late November also boosted bullion coin buying by investors and speculators alike, coin dealers said.

"There is a huge influx of new high-net-worth individuals that are buying a lot of gold, and they are taking physical possession of it," said David Beahm, vice president of Blanchard & Co, one of the largest U.S. retail coin and bullion dealers.

Investors have so far this month bought 131,000 ounces of American Eagles produced by the U.S. Mint, more than tripled last year’s November sales and marked the strongest November since 1998, data from the Mint’s website shows.

November marked the second consecutive monthly rise after a dismal performance earlier this year. In October, the Mint sold 59,000 ounces versus 50,000 ounce in the same period last year.
"This quarter is shaping up to be one of the best since the last quarter of 2008," Beahm said.

Dealers also reported coin blanks buying by the U.S. Mint as it was set to mint the 2013 American Eagle coins.

The Mint typically shuts its 2012 coin production in early December so it can start minting next year’s which are usually highly sought after by coin dealers and collectors.

American Eagle silver coin sales in November rose to 3.135 million ounces, more than double last year’s sales at 1.384 million. It was, however, slightly below October’s at 3.153 million ounces.

Political uncertainty due to a heated U.S. presidential race and $600 billion automatic cuts in government spending and tax increases early next year have boosted gold investment, analysts said.

Even though a recession resulting from the so-called fiscal cliff could severely undermine gold’s inflation-hedge appeal, it is also likely to trigger a flight to quality investment such as gold amid economic uncertainty, trader said.

American Eagle gold coin sales tend to be highly seasonal, with the strongest performance at the start of the year as investors seek the newest edition. Sales are usually the lowest in the summer months and tend to pick up again in September in tandem with the start of the Indian wedding season and the lunar new year between January and February.

American Gold and Silver Eagle Bullion Coins Break Losing Streak

http://news.coinupdate.com/american-gol … reak-1680/

November 1, 2012 By Michael Zielinski

For the first time this year, the United States Mint’s American Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins recorded higher monthly sales than the year ago period.

The economic turmoil and uncertainties experienced during 2008 led to renewed interest in precious metals investment. This situation led to problems for the United States Mint, which was unable to produce an adequate supply of bullion coins to meet public demand. The often dubbed "unprecedented demand" led to temporary sales suspensions and prolonged periods of allocation, during which available supplies were rationed amongst authorized purchasers.

Despite the suspensions and rationing, sales of the American Silver Eagle bullion coins reached an all time annual sales record of 19,583,500 coins in 2008. This was followed by successive record breaking annual sales totals in 2009, 2010, and 2011, when annual sales reached 39,868,500 coins.

Demand finally seemed to slow during 2012, with monthly sales levels for both Gold and Silver Eagles falling below year ago levels for each month from January to September. The streak was finally broken with the sales figures for October 2012, which narrowly surpassed the sales figures from October 2011.

2011 vs. 2012 American Silver Eagle Sales

For October 2012, sales of American Gold Eagle bullion coins accounted for 59,000 ounces. Although this was down from the prior month when 68,500 ounces were sold, it was up from the year ago period when sales were 50,000 ounces.

For the year to date, Gold Eagle sales have now reached 540,500 troy ounces. This is tracking about 40% below the pace of sales from last year.

American Silver Eagle monthly sales reached 3,153,000 ounces. Once again this was a decline from the previous month when 3,255,000 ounces were sold, however it was up from the year ago period when sales reached 3,064,000.

For the year to date, Silver Eagle sales have reached 28,948,000 ounces. This is down by about 21% from sales for the comparable period of last year.
